Forfar Athletic 4 Stirling Albion 3

With just seven games to go in season 2011/12 the battle to avoid the relegation spots is in full flow. Coming into this weekend’s action the three teams most under the threat of SFL3 were separated by four points. Albion Rovers sat bottom of the pile but the Beanos and today’s opponents Forfar were only a further two and four points respectively ahead of the Coatbridge side. A vital match then was in store for the Albion and their newly confirmed manager Greig McDonald. The Loons have had the upper hand in the three games between the sides to date collecting five points from the nine on offer. In fact if it hadn’t been for two Daly McSorley last minute equalisers the bridie munchers would have won all three games. Team lines for this crunch fixture showed just the one change from the draw against Arbroath as the suspended Gary [… more]

Stirling Albion 0 East Fife 1

With back to back wins in the league for the first time since the first two games of the season the Beanos were today looking to make it a hatrick of three pointers. Standing in their way were John Robertson and his East Fife squad. The Fifers were many peoples fancy for a serious title tilt but to date it hasn’t really worked out that way. As things stand East Fife came into this afternoon’s encounter only a couple of points ahead of their hosts. A win for the Albion and Greig McDonald would therefore see his team leapfrog his old side in the table. Team lines for the Beanos showed just the one change from Cliftonhill. Out went the suspended John Crawley as the fit again Devon Jacobs returned to the starting line-up. On a breezy, wet day at the DDS the match kicked off with Stirling shooting towards [… more]

Stirling Albion 1 Dundee 2

Stirling were given the week off from their Division Two struggles as the Scottish Cup took centre stage this afternoon with Dundee visiting the DDS. Not the most exciting of draws but at least the Exec would have been happy with a bigger than normal crowd scheduled to be in attendance, albeit mostly in the away stand ! The sides were of course in the same division last season and unlike the Beanos the visitors weren’t much changed from those fixtures. Team lines for this latest encounter between the sides saw a couple of alterations to the Albion XI who started against Arbroath. Marc McCulloch missed out through injury while Josh Flood moved down to the bench. Into the side came the lightly used pair of Craig McLeish and Stevie Nicholas. On a cold but otherwise decent day for football the match kicked off with Stirling shooting towards the Monument [… more]

Dumbarton 1 Stirling Albion 5

Following last weekend’s excellent win over the much fancied East Fife the Beanos second league clash of the season took them down to Dumbarton. The midweek irrelevance at Livingston would have been quickly forgotten by Jocky Scott’s men as they returned to the much more important job of collecting league points. Dumbarton started the competitive season with a narrow win over East Stirling in the Ramsdens since when it’s been three successive defeats. In their league opener the Sons went down by three goals to nil on the plastic paradise that is Airdrie’s Excelsior pitch. Stirling too lost heavily in North Lanarkshire so nothing really for either manager to draw from those matches. With an all new squad to watch the Albion fans are still not sure what to expect from their favourites. However, if they continue to show the effort, endeavour and no little skill as was on display [… more]

Stirling Albion 2 Cliftonville 3

Stirling played their third and final public pre-season friendly on Saturday afternoon as Northern Ireland outfit Cliftonville visited the DDS. The match was officially the Ladbrokes Cup, a one off game between two of the nations fan owned teams. Cliftonville defeated FC United of Manchester last year so came to Scotland as holders. That said the game was still expected to be the usual pre-season fare with the managers looking to give trialists a go and signed players another fitness boost. As it turned out the 90 minutes that followed was perhaps one of the more competitive friendlies this scribe has seen in many a year. For whatever reason none of the players were listed as trialists on the team sheet even though it’s obvious that several were not signed players. The ones who I think were still trialists are marked as such: Stirling Albion: 1. Sam Filler (Trialist) , [… more]
