For the first time in a few years the format of the Stirlingshire Cup changed from a group based tournament to straight knock out. At one point in time the Shire Cup used to generate a ripple of excitement amongst Albion supporters but those days are long gone. These days the Shire Cup simply provides sides with the opportunity to give reserve players and youth teamers a run out. This was to prove the case again at the Falkirk Stadium on Tuesday night. After two wins in the group stages Stirling faced up to old rivals East Stirlingshire in this years Stirlingshire Cup Final. On a breezy, but not too cold an evening for football the final took place at the Shires home of Firs Park in front of a crowd of 414. With a place in the final of the Shire Cup at stake for the winners old rivals Stirling and Alloa clashed in their final group match at Recreation Park tonight. Both sides fielded fringe squads, with Alloa in particular giving youth a fling. On a pleasant Tuesday evening at Forthbank the Albion set out to defend the Shire cup once again and make it three wins on the trot. In the middle of some difficult league fixtures it was always expected that Stirling would field a fringe squad. So it proved but one or two players might have been a bit surprised to play.
