From looking to be on the end of a possible thrashing at Peterhead the Beanos showed a rare streak of fighting spirit to earn our first away point last Saturday. No league action this weekend and instead the chance to build on that result came against Highland League Deveronvale in Round 3 of the William Hill Scottish Cup. The teams met in the Ramsdens last season when the Beanos won 3-1 up in Banff on what must have been the coldest July day on record. Since that encounter Stirling have been relegated to Division Three and currently we sit bottom of that league. The Vale on the other hand continue to be one of the leading lights of the HFL and are once again in contention for league honours. Stirling supporters were given a day off from their league struggles as we headed to pastures new in the second round of the Scottish Cup. South of Scotland League champions Dalbeattie Star were set to host Greig McDonald’s men in a tie which had banana skin written all over it. The Islecroft stadium outfit have won every competitive match they have played this season and usually with a few goals to spare. The feeling has always been that the South is the weakest of the senior non-league arenas but winning so often would ensure that if nothing else Dalbeattie were a confident team. Stirling would need to be “at it” from the off if the spectre of that horror day in Galashiels was not to rear its ugly head. Team lines showed a change of approach from the Beanos. Stirling took a break from their miserable run of results in Division One to host Partick Thistle on Scottish Cup duty. With Stirling already having four games against Thistle, including one three weeks ago and another next week, it wasn’t a cup tie which was ever likely to set pulses racing. However, with the big guns entering in the next round the chance was there for either side to win and draw money spinning opposition. The Beanos have won twice in league action against Thistle this season so would have fancied their chances of progressing in the Scottish Cup. That said our form has of course been rotten of late so confidence might not have been as high as it would have been a few short weeks ago.
