With one cup tie played and won it was time for a more difficult cup assignment this weekend as Jocky Scott’s team made the short trip to North Lanarkshire to take on Airdrie United. Due to cash concerns the Diamonds were forced down the youth road last season and did remarkably well to finish in mid-table with nearly 50 points. Most of last seasons squad is still in place at the Excelsior and with experienced lads like David Lilley and Derek Holmes being brought in it augurs well for another solid campaign for Jimmy Boyle’s charges. With the SPL clubs entering the League Cup in a couple of rounds the chance was there to earn some much needed income. After the win over local rivals Falkirk last weekend it was more cup action at Forthbank on Saturday as Forfar Athletic visited in the CIS League Cup. Unlike the Alba League Challenge, the CIS Cup has some good prize money and with the likes of Hearts and Aberdeen possible second round opponents a win today was vital for the club coffers. Confidence would have been high in the Stirling camp following the victory over the Bairns but today was set to be a different challenge against a team most would have expected John O’Neill’s side to beat. Team lines for this afternoon’s encounter saw just the two changes from last weekend. One was enforced as the suspended Ross Forsyth was replaced at left back by Stewart Devine.
