The reward for Stirling’s Ramsdens cup  win up in Banff against Deveronvale was a trip to the West Lothian roundabout capital of Livingston. Many seasons ago we promised never to attend another away midweek tie in the League Challenge and that wasn’t changing with this draw. Can’t stand the tournament. How can anyone get excited about an event where the biggest team you might get is Dundee or Falkirk. Novelties like Deveronvale apart this is one big badly attended irrelevance. However, it’s part of the schedule so it must be played. For me it’s all about Dumbarton on Saturday but for those who want to know what happened at the Braidwood Motors Stadium, well here are the bare facts. Official team lines from tonight’s game were: Livingston: 1. Andrew McNeil, 2. Jonathan Brown, 3. David Sinclair, 4. Craig Barr, 5. Cameron MacDonald, 6. Paul Watson, 7. Kyle Jacobs, 8. The shadow boxing is over. The gloves are off. Use whatever cliché you like but the bottom line was that pre-season was over and the competitive action started this afternoon. Deveronvale are one of the strongest teams in the Highland League and were sure to be up for causing a surprise in what would be their first appearance in the competition. The XI named by Jocky Scott was along roughly expected lines based on what was witnessed in the Rangers and Cliftonville games. Maybe the only eyebrow raiser was the appearance of big Gavin Macpherson on the right wing, but the [… more]

After the shadow boxing of pre-season the gloves were off for real as the Alba League Challenge signalled the official start of the 2010/11 campaign. To spice things up even more the opponents in today’s cup clash were local rivals Falkirk. The Bairns were relegated to SFL1 on the last day of last season and manager Steven Pressley will be expected to lead them back to the promised land at the first attempt. Many people scoff at the League Challenge but for teams like Stirling, and especially Falkirk, it gives them the chance to reach a national final and win a trophy. Falkirk were big favourites for a comfortable win before kick-off but John O’Neill’s hastily assembled squad showed against Grimsby that they would be nobodies fools. Team lines for the Beanos were along expected lines. Making competitive debuts for the home side were Martyn Corrigan, Scot Buist and John [… more]
